The Museum of Bags and Purses is a unique museum that shows the history of the Western bag from the 16th century to the present day. The collection offers a fascinating insight into the development of the bag through the centuries in its function, shape, material and decoration.
The Cat Cabinet was founded in commemoration of the red and frisky Tom Cat, John Pierpont Morgan, the life long companion and buddy of the museum's founder, Bob Meijer. Every 5 years, J.P Morgan would receive a special present which was related to himself. In honor of his first" lustrum", he was given a self portrait by Ansèl Sanberg. On his tenth birthday, however, his gift was of a bonze statue also representing himself. Unfortunately, this statue was stolen just before the Cat Cabinet opened its' doors. To commemorate Morgan's 15th birthday, a plan was conceived to compile a booklet of cat-limericks dedicated to Morgan. A "Hanige kat uit Toulouse" was soon published.
Museum Van Loon is situated on the Keizersgracht. The double-sized canal house dates from 1672. The first resident was the painter Ferdinand Bol, one of Rembandt's most famous pupils. In the nineteenth century, the Van Loon family came to live in the house. The family's history is closely intertwined with that of Amsterdam. Several Van Loons held important positions as city-mayors. Others, such as Willem van Loon, fulfilled decisive functions in the Dutch East-India Company. The last resident of the house, before it became a museum, was Thora van Loon - Egidius. She was Dame du Palais of Queen Wilhelmina for forty years, and as such invited important royal guest to the house. Throughout time, the interior and exterior have remained practically intact. Today they form a fascinating historical monument. Museum Van Loon proudly invites you to visit the house and its collection.
Founded in 2004, the Amsterdam Tulip Museum seeks to fill a void in the history of the tulip. Amsterdam has no comparable institution dedicated to telling Holland's fascinating horticultural story. Located in the Jordaan district, the museum offers a special reward for anyone interested in gardening, or simply sightseeing in Amsterdam. The exhibits include several interactive video displays that trace the tulip bulb from its ancient wild origins to modern 21st century cultivation.
